About the mask art piece
The technique I used in creating this mask (9" x 6"x 2") is from the Huichol Indians of Oaxaca, Mexico. The mask is a commercial face-form I covered with a thin layer of beeswax, which I then meticulously pressed small glass beads into of varying colors and arrangements. The mask symbolizes my life with my son through his schizophrenia disorder.
My interpretation of the mask art is as follows:
"Open Book" = knowledge and meaning. The dull gold-colored beads of the book symbol represents the knowledge that is stagnant in my son's head when he says, "My mind is full, there's no more room." The bright gold-colored beads down the center of the book represents the hope that knowledge will get in, somehow. The warm colors framing the forehead represents my hope and faith and love, which will always be with him.
"Heart Eyes"= the love or emotions he has within, yet cannot express.
"Leaf Mouth"= sewn shut by its veins. A haunting fear that keeps him silent.
"Open Hand"= he is physically there, but remains unresponsive, without the ability to connect and possess a purposeful goal.
"Nature's Colors"= this mental illness that kidnapped my son ten years ago is all around us. One in 100 persons will be affected by paranoid schizophrenia; it crosses all nationalities regardless of race or gender--Research findings from N.A.M.I.
